Anthropic extends Claude Fable 5 and localizes pricing in India

Anthropic has moved Claude Fable 5’s sunset date back again for subscription plans. The model remains free (up to 50% of the weekly limit) for Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise users until July 19, 2026, instead of switching to paid access on July 13 as previously announced. As we reported on July 13, each extension signals the pricing competition following GPT-5.6 Sol’s launch.

On the same day, Anthropic began localizing Claude pricing for India, its second-largest market after the US (5.8% of global usage). Plans now appear in rupees on web and app, with Claude Pro at ₹2,000/month (roughly $21), Max at ₹11,999 (roughly $125), and Team at ₹2,399 per user (roughly $25). Prices include local taxes, making them higher than US rates. UPI support is still missing, the instant payment network used by most Indian users: currently only card payments and Apple/Google store billing are available.

Why it matters to you. If you use Claude Fable 5, you have another week before it switches to pay-as-you-go credits. If you work in the Indian market or have colleagues there, local pricing reduces friction but costs remain higher than in the US, and the lack of UPI is a practical barrier. The move also signals India’s growing weight as an AI market: OpenAI had launched rupee pricing with UPI in August, and Anthropic opened its Bengaluru office in February after appointing Irina Ghose (former Microsoft India) in January.

In detail

The context of the extension

Claude Fable 5 was set to become paid on July 13, 2026. Anthropic delayed by six days, and this isn’t the first time: as we documented on July 5 after the US export controls revocation, and July 13 with the first extension. Each delay coincides with competitive pressure: GPT-5.6 Sol is included in the standard ChatGPT subscription, costs less via API, and is claimed to be more token-efficient. Anthropic can’t compete on Claude Opus 4.8 alone, especially as budget models like GLM 5.2, Meta Spark 1.1, and Grok 4.5 gain ground.

The extension also covers the 50% boost to Claude Code limits through July 19. Fable 5 consumes limits faster than other Claude models, and maintaining free access for an extra week is a tactical lever while the market settles after GPT-5.6’s launch.

India pricing: what changes

India is Claude’s second-largest market by usage volume (5.8% globally), but until now pricing was only in dollars, with friction from exchange rates and international fees. Rupee localization removes that step for new plan viewers, though effective prices are higher: Pro at $21 versus $17 in the US, Max at $125 versus $100, Team at $25 per seat versus $20. The difference covers local taxes.

The practical constraint is the absence of UPI, the instant payment network that dominates in India. OpenAI had launched rupees with UPI in August; Anthropic currently requires card or app store billing, adding friction in a price-sensitive market. Some users are reporting slight price differences between web and mobile app.

Why India matters

Anthropic has made deliberate moves in the Indian market over recent months: Bengaluru office opened in February (announced in October), Irina Ghose appointed in January to lead local business, partnerships with Infosys and Tata Consultancy Services for enterprise deployments. In June, however, there was a setback when Anthropic suspended access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5 for non-US entities, pushing Indian developers to consider alternatives. Fable 5 was restored; Mythos 5 remains restricted.

India has a large developer and tech worker base, but converting widespread usage into paid subscriptions remains a challenge in a market where price is a strong barrier. Price localization is a step, but without UPI and with rates higher than the US, friction persists.
